Story of Guy told in pub car park

Drinkers in Warwick pubs have witnessed the revival of a theatrical tradition dating back hundreds of years.
The Slaughterhouse Players have recreated the legend of Guy of Warwick in pub car parks around the town.
It tells the tale of the town’s beast-slaying hero, said to have become a peace-loving recluse after returning from a pilgrimage, but who defeated the Danish giant Colbrand to save the town.
By the 17th century the legend had become so overblown that tavern performers made Guy an object of ridicule.
The Slaughterhouse Players revived the tradition when they first performed a new version of the play last year, but toured pub car parks around the town as part of Warwick International Festival.
Dave Southam, who plays the young Guy, said: “It’s a bawdy and boisterous version of the story but we have tried to be a little more even-handed.” JUN184
